SAN JUAN DE DIOS
Juan Ciudad Duarte nació el año 1495 en el pueblo Portugués de Montemos y murió en Granada, España, el año 1550. Para todos es conocido como “El Santo” El Apellido de Dios le vino impuesto por un Obispo conocedor de su obra a favor de los pobres y enfermos. No cabe mayor honor que apellidarse de Dios y nada refleja mejor el modo de hacer de este hombre.
Después de una vida de muchos viajes y carreras por toda España llegó a Granada donde experimentó una conversión profunda después de oír un sermón de San Juan de Ávila. Juan parece haberse loco y grita, se revuelca clamando “misericordia” Se produce un total despojo de sus pocos haberes, hasta de sus vestidos. Por eso, dos hombres “honrados” compadecidos, tomaron de la mano a Juan y lo llevaron al manicomio, una parte del Hospital Real de Granada ocupado por los locos. Allí Juan descubrió su vocación. El escribió algunos años después que “Jesucristo me traiga a tiempo y me dé gracia para que yo tenga un hospital donde pueda recoger los pobres desamparados, y faltos de juicio, y servirles como yo deseo.”
La fama de Juan creció en Granada. El acogió a todos los pobres inválidos que encontró, a los niños, huérfanos, y abandonados. Visitaba y rehabilitabaa muchas mujeres prostitutas, y todo sin renta fija. Su reclamo era, “Quién se hace bien a si mismo dando a los pobres de Cristo?”
Hubo un fuego en el Hospital Real el día tres de Julio. Allí acudió entrar y sacar los enfermos saliendo sano y salvo. Desde ese momento Juan adquirió la categoría de santo y su fama llega a todas partes.
Juan murió el día 8 de marzo de 1550. Fue canonizado el día 12 de octubre de 1690 y declarado Patrón de los enfermos en 1930. Es también el Patrón de los Bomberos.
ST. JOHN OF GOD
John Ciudad Duarte was born in 1495 in a small Portuguese town called Montemor and died in Granada, Spain in 1550. At the time of his death he was known as “the Saint”. He was given the last name “of God” by a Bishop who was familiar with his work among the sick and the poor. There was no other description that best fitted the work of this man.
After a life of many travels and different occupations, Juan arrived in Granada where he experienced a profound conversion after hearing a sermon preached by St. John of Avila. He was so affected by the words of this man that he seemed mentally deranged as he went screaming through the streets pleading for mercy and ridding himself of all his possessions—including his clothing. Two honorable men brought him to the wing of the Royal Hospital that was set aside for the mentally sick. There John discovered his vocation. He wrote some years later that “Jesus Christ brought me there at the right time and gave me the grace so that I might have a hospital where I could gather the poor, the homeless, the mentally infirm, and serve them as I desired.”
The reputation of John grew in Granada as he began to gather the poor, the children, the orphans, and even many street women, whom he rehabilitated. He managed without a fixed income but went begging through the streets for them. Once a fire broke pout in the Royal Hospital. John like everyone else rushed to the scene. Instead of lamenting the situation, John went into the burning building and emerged from the flames with his patients safe and sound.
John died on the 8th of March in 1550. He was canonized in 1690 and declared the Patron Saint of the sick in 1930. He is also the Patron Saint of firemen. |
